“To the Palace for the Cup!”

This evening, at 7pm,  the sport and ‘make a book’ themes continue with Ian Bevan talking about the history of football at Crystal Palace – how “an affectionate history of football at the Crystal Palace from 1861” – started as an idea  and became a   self-published book on the subject.

On Saturday, July 2, author Alex Milway intoduces friends working in children’s literature – Gary Northfield, Tamsyn Murray, Jim Helmore & Karen Wall, and C T Furlong

Kicking off final BecFest week, on Monday evening at 6:30pm, Writers Unlimited Beckenham Bubble Two celebrates ‘Independence Day’ 4th of July with special guests from published world of art, poetry, performance, and most appropriately – independent self-publishing.

A Talk by Brian Scovell

At 6:30pm this evening sports writer Brian Scovell talks about his work and books.

From a German raid in 1943, leaving him in hospital for two years reading the sports pages of the Daily Herald – to books on Bobby Robson, Trevor Brooking, Dickie Bird and Brian Lara, and memoir “Thank You Hermann Goering – A Life of a Sports Writer“.

On Friday July 1, at 7pm,  the sport and ‘make a book’ themes continue with Ian Bevan talking about the history of football at Crystal Palace and its process of becoming published.

BecFest ‘make a book’ day

Artist and illustrator Lyn Stone’s amusing drawings enliven children’s books . From history, gift to pop-up books. Her Make a Book talk begins at 2pm.

Authors, artists, storytellers, poets: with their readers and listeners; bubble together at summer literary festivals the world over. The same writers, storytellers and poets may also group together in their localities all year round for mutual support and helpful comment.

Shortlands Poetry Circle began in 1911. The Beckenham Scribblers  and Writers Unlimited are two more collectives to emerge from the borough in recent years.

Beckenham Bubble one starts at 7pm with old and new writers looking forward to  ‘The Next Hundred Years’.

Tomorrow, June 30, at 6:30pm,  sports writer  Brian Scovell is giving a talk.

BecFest today!

Lucy Faithfull was the  first social worker to sit in the House of Lords.  This afternoon at 2pm, Judith Niechcial, author of Lucy Faithfull: Mother to Hundreds and A Partcle of Clay: The Biography of Alec Skempton, Civil Engineer  will speak.

Fact and Fiction.  This evening at 7pm, Imogen Robertson and Haille Rubenhold discuss their latest books and the art of writing and getting published.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 29th, has  ‘make a book’ theme with artist and illustrator Lyn Stone speaking at 2pm.

Also tomorrow, “the next hundred years”. Long-standing readers from local writers’ groups (ie Shortlands Poetry Circle est 1911) meet up with newer readers and writers for  Writers Unlimited Beckenham Bubble (one) at 7pm – looking forward to 2111.
