Saturday morning

Today,  Saturday July 9th, Becfest 2011 closes its Library doors with a talk at 11am this morning – ‘Writing Literary Mysteries’ by Crystal Palace author Chris Bowden, whose third novel is published autumn 2011.

A second talk scheduled for 3:30pm by Malorie Blackman,  popular author of books for children and young adults,  is unfortunately cancelled due to ill health.

Travelling around the world in pop fiction and haiku

This morning, July 8 at 11am, Kate Nivison holds a workshop  on ‘how to turn your holidays into popular fiction’. Writer of both fiction and non-fiction for magazines, radio, and television:  Kate Nivision also writes regularly on travel for national and international publications.

And this evening at 6:30pm, Beckenham Library hosts  ‘conversation with a diversity writer’.  Singapore-born Rosaline Ting  is a playwright who writes film scripts and prose, along with poetry that includes haiku form.

Creative Writing Workshop

This afternoon, Tuesday at 2pm, Zoe Fairbairns – locally-based novelist and former poetry editor of Spare Rib magazine is holding a Creative Writing Workshop.

Zoe Fairbairns has held writer-in- residence appointments in Australia, UK counties north and south, along with Bromley schools in the 1980s.

Her third novel Benefits (Virago, 1979),  a “novel of the future”  is set against the background of …one of the last tower blocks to be built in the sixties for London families to live in.

Tomorrow, Wednesday July 6, at 4pm, the “make a book” theme continues with a  Children’s Craft Session followed with a talk by author Joanna Czechowska at 6:30pm on the background to her novel The Black Madonna of Derby.

‘Independence day self-publish and be blessed’

“To the Palace for the Cup!”

This evening, at 7pm,  the sport and ‘make a book’ themes continue with Ian Bevan talking about the history of football at Crystal Palace – how “an affectionate history of football at the Crystal Palace from 1861” – started as an idea  and became a   self-published book on the subject.

On Saturday, July 2, author Alex Milway intoduces friends working in children’s literature – Gary Northfield, Tamsyn Murray, Jim Helmore & Karen Wall, and C T Furlong

A Talk by Brian Scovell

At 6:30pm this evening sports writer Brian Scovell talks about his work and books.

From a German raid in 1943, leaving him in hospital for two years reading the sports pages of the Daily Herald – to books on Bobby Robson, Trevor Brooking, Dickie Bird and Brian Lara, and memoir “Thank You Hermann Goering – A Life of a Sports Writer“.

On Friday July 1, at 7pm,  the sport and ‘make a book’ themes continue with Ian Bevan talking about the history of football at Crystal Palace and its process of becoming published.
